Whitianga Oceans Festival - POSTPONED unitl 2022.
The impact of Covid-19 and the unknown period in which the nation (or parts of the nation) need to remain locked down means we cannot plan ahead with any certainty and are unlikely to be at an alert level that enables us to hold an event of this size.
This event has such a positive impact on the local Whitianga community so this decision has not been made lightly. A huge amount of effort has gone into the revamped festival that has evolved from the Whitianga Scallop Festival and we thank all of those individuals and groups who have worked towards and were to be part of this day. We were very excited to be bringing you all another great event and enjoy as much sustainably caught seafood as we could work in. We remain keen to use this work to bring you a festival in the future instead.
We will be in touch with all ticket holders and stallholders over the coming week.
We are committed to the festival ongoing and look forward to hosting everyone in September 2022 when hopefully our world is a more stable environment.
On behalf of the Whitianga Oceans Festival Committee
It's a seafood celebration! The incredible Whitianga Scallop Fest has now evolved sustainably into the Whitianga Oceans Festival - From dock to dish - A celebration of all things seafood will be held in Lyon park on the stunning Whitianga Harbour.
"There is currently a rāhui (no harvest) in place for the collection of scallops in the Opito Bay area, and elsewhere in New Zealand. The sustainability of scallops locally and nationally is a priority for Whitianga Scallop Festival Inc. In observing the need for the rāhui and the need to ensure the regeneration of scallops, the festival organisers will focus on offering a variety of seafood from New Zealand waters this year as the local scallop beds are left to rest."
Can you believe this festival is now having it's sweet 16th birthday? With a mouth watering selection of fresh seafood prepared by amazing chefs and food vendors and paired with incredible wines and beers.
Plus, live music, street performers and more! You cannot miss out on this amazing event.
